All hail the mighty Megatron who this week broke Jerry Rice's record for the most receiving yards in a single season. The record was set by Rice in 1995 and stood at 1848 yards in 16 games. As you can see the record has lasted for 17 years and was one of Jerry Rice's many great achievements.
Going into the game against the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday night Calvin Johnson needed 182 yards to break the record. You wouldn't have been alone in thinking he would not break it this week but would hit the mark before the end of the season. It would seem that Calvin had other ideas as by the end of the game he finished with 11 catches for 225 yards.
With the record now broken Megatron has one more game to set a new record which may even last longer than 17 years!! Unfortunately for Detroit, Johnson's record breaking night was the only good news for them as they lost to the Falcons 31 - 18.

Another player close to breaking a long standing record is Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings. For those who have not seen, Adrian Peterson is close to breaking the record for most rushing yards in a single season. The record set by Eric Dickerson stands at 2105 yards and on Sunday night Peterson got 86 yards closer.
In week 16 the Vikings squared off against the Houston Texans and so this was always going to be a tough game for Peterson to get big amounts of yardage. It was a strange game to watch if I am honest as the Texans were playing for nothing but pride as they has already won the AFC South last week. The Vikings on the other hand are playing 'lose and go home football' if they want to reach the playoffs. In the end this match up was won by the Vikings 23 - 6 and was also the first time Houston has not scored a touchdown since 2006.
Following the game this week Adrian Peterson now has 1898 yards this season and requires 207 yards in the final game against Green Bay this Sunday to break the record.
Okay so before we move onto all the scores from week 16 there is one more player that I want to talk about and that is Peyton Manning.

In my eyes Peyton Manning is on the verge of having back to back MVP seasons. Last year I think he was MVP without even suiting up for the Colts, it was his lack of appearance that showed just how valuable he is. The Colts went on to have a horrible season and finished last year with a 2 - 14 record. As you all know this year Peyton plays for the Denver Broncos and he has turned an 8-8 team from last year into a 12-3 team this season. They currently share the lead of the AFC with the Houston Texans and have the chance to secure home field advantage for all of the playoffs.
So far this season Manning has thrown for 4355 yards and 34 touchdowns. I am sure you will agree Manning is showing why he is considered to be one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game!
Let us now move onto all of the scores from week 16:

The playoff picture looks a lot clearer now in the NFC with just one week to go in the regular season. The NFC West however is still up for grabs following Seattle's win over San Francisco. Seattle has now moved to a record of 10-5 and with a win next week and a San Francisco loss they will take the division. Personally I am still in shock about this as at the start of the season I thought this division was going to be a one horse race!
The Seattle Seahawks are currently playing great football on both sides of the ball and could be a dark horse for the Superbowl. In other NFC news the Washington Redskins now control their own fate after beating the Eagles this week. In week 17 the Redskins can seal the NFC East with a win over the Cowboys. In the words of my good friend Mickey 'Big Dog' Hogg it's squeaky bum time next week for him and his fellow Redskins fans.
So let me clarify the playoff position in NFC below:
1. Atlanta 13-2
2. Green Bay 11-4
3. San Francisco 10-4-1
4. Washington 9-6
5. Seattle 10-5
6. Minnesota 9-6
There are a few teams still hanging about and they are Chicago (9-6), Dallas (8-7) and New York Giants (8-7).

Finally let us finish off with the AFC playoff picture. Going into the last week of the season, home field advantage is still up for grabs between three teams. The New England Patriots, The Houston Texans and Denver Broncos could each take the advantage if they win and one of the other teams lose. I heard an interesting fact this week and that is the New England Patriots have never made the Superbowl when they have not had a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
Below these teams the remaining playoff rankings are pretty much set as all of the AFC playoff teams are now known. The Colts, Ravens and Bengals are the remaining teams in the AFC playoffs. Below is the official list of how the teams currently stand:
1. Houston 12-3
2. Denver 12-3
3. New England 11-4
4. Baltimore 10-5
5. Indianapolis 10-5
6. Cincinnati 9-6
Well that raps it up from me for another week but before I go I would like to wish you all a merry christmas and happy new year. Until next week everyone take care and stay safe.
